On Urban Memory: The Eleonora Arhelaou Archive

“[Eleonora] Arhelaou took most of the photographs by walking through different parts of Istanbul. The consecutive strips of 36 exposures show that she sometimes walked from İstiklal Avenue to Tarlabaşı and then on to Tepebaşı, Kasımpaşa, and Karaköy, covering most of these neighborhoods on foot. Given that each generation has a different memory and perspective of the city, Arhelaou’s documentation spanning more than twenty years can be said to play an important role in preserving information about buildings that, for various reasons, have not survived amid the city’s rapid transformation.”
